The Beach You Have Been Searching For
The small Puebla known as Holbox Island is a fishing community of 1500 souls that live in harmony in the Yucatan sun. As they have for decades, most commercially fish the gulf for the fish, shrimp, and lobster demanded by the Cancun market while the rest cater to the few, mostly European visitors, that have discovered the wonderful Isla Holbox.
Beach Activities on Holbox Island
Isla Holbox is a sun-and-sand vacation paradise on the Mexican Riviera. While famous as one of the premier Tarpon fisheries in the world, Isla Holbox is also a beach and sun lover’s paradise, with a number of unique and fun activities available:
Snorkel with Whale Sharks
Giant whale sharks (like the giant tarpon) feed at Isla Holbox in the summer. There are scheduled trips to snorkel and photograph these gentle giants in their own environment.
Sea Kayak Paddling
One of the most relaxing yet active ways to play is to take a guided sea kayaking excursion. You can poke around some of the estuaries and lagoons, and see the beach from a different perspective.
Get out of the water for a while and ride horses along the white sand beaches and mangrove estuaries of Isla Holbox. You’ll probably see some migrating Flamingos feeding in lagoons.
Shopping in Town
Rent a golf cart and explore other parts of the Island. Shop in the quaint bodegas, sample some fresh ceviche, pose with colorful Mayan murals, and get out to more remote beaches and lagoons.
Explore Mayan Ruins
The nearby Yucatan Jungles, rich with Mayan culture and ruins, are populated with the descendants of a civilization that mysteriously eroded hundreds of years ago. You can visit the famous Chichen Itza city of Mayan ruins on a long day trip from the lodge.
Yucatan Jungle Tours
Swim in the sweet water springs in the limestone Cenote pools of Yucatan. Zip-Line through the tropical forest canopy. Photograph exotic birds and other wildlife.
Snorkeling with the Whale Sharks
Available June through September
